Richard Strauss is one of the area's most famous sons. Although he was born in Munich, in 1908 he commissioned a villa in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Built as a summer residence, the villa, which still is the private property of the Strauss family and is, thus, not open to the public, quickly became the principal residence of Strauss and his family, and remained so until his death in 1949. The Richard-Strauss-Institute recalls the great composer and the times in which he lived. The institute also organises regular exhibitions and lectures and possesses an impressive collection of Strauss literature and recordings. A virtual tour through the Strauss Villa is available as well.
