Culture - both with and without End(e)
Do you remember the children's character „Jim Knopf“? Perhaps as a child, you too accompanied him on his adventures with the Wild 13. And Momo, in her fight against the grey men. And little Bastian in his „Neverending Story“. There's no question that Michael Ende's imaginative stories have won the hearts of children all over the world for generations.
But did you know that the author was born here in Garmisch in 1929? A fascinating permanent exhibition in the Kurhaus takes a look at his childhood and youth, his life and works - “Michael Ende – The Beginning of the End(e)”. You can also meet well-known characters from the “Augsburger Puppenkiste” (a famous marionette theatre from Augsburg, Germany). Recommended for children and young adults from 13 years.
Exhibitions in the Market Gallery in the Kurhaus Garmisch
The “Market Gallery” is located in the Kurhaus Garmisch. Here you can find alternating art exhibitions, comfortable reading rooms and the Michael-Ende-exhibition.From Tuesday until Sunday from 11:00 pm - 6:00 pm currently open.

Aschenbrenner Museum
Where can you find pugs enthroned on pillows? Where can porcelain figures dance? Where do dolls embark on railway journeys? And where else can you see the Nativity narrated by hand-carved works of art? The Aschenbrenner Museum takes you back into a bygone world.
The ground floor welcomes you with Baroque music - fitting for porcelain exhibits from the 18th century. The atmosphere on the 1st floor is altogether different – childish and happy instead of courtly and elegant. Here you'll find a hands-on history of dolls: from the very first paper-mâché dolls to the deluxe Barbie in her glittery silver dress. In the new and modern building you can also enjoy numerous artfully designed Christmas cribs.

Werdenfels Museum
The Werdenfels Museum is one of the most impressive of its kind in Bavaria. Spread over 5 floors and 900m², the museum tells the eventful story of the Werdenfels region and its rich culture; with everything from outstanding sacred items to simple objects of rural folklore. The museum conveys a good sense of how it was to live and work here in the past. A journey back in time, as educational as it is fascinating.

Richard-Strauss-Institute
Richard Strauss is one of the area's most famous sons. Although he was born in Munich, in 1908 he commissioned a villa in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Built as a summer residence, the villa, which still is the private property of the Strauss family and is, thus, not open to the public, quickly became the principal residence of Strauss and his family, and remained so until his death in 1949. The Richard-Strauss-Institute recalls the great composer and the times in which he lived. The institute also organises regular exhibitions and lectures and possesses an impressive collection of Strauss literature and recordings. A virtual tour through the Strauss Villa is available as well.
