Landscape like a Painting
In 1914, the artist bought a house at Kochel am See, which he lived in until his death. The Franz Marc museum in Kochel am See - with its impressive architecture - commemorates the painter. Many of his paintings are on exhibit here, alongside works by his artist contemporaries Kandinsky, Macke, Münter and Campendonck.
Above Lake Kochelsee is the idyllic Lake Walchensee. At a depth of 200m, Walchensee is one of the deepest lakes in the Bavarian Alps and a paradise for sailors and surfers. In addition to water sports, the lake, which is rich in fish, is also a great destination for fishing.
The road along the lake passes through Urfeld on its way to the main township, Walchensee. From here you can take the Herzogstandbahn cable car to the top of the mountain and then it's only a short walk to the summit. From here you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the whole valley. The summit is also the starting point for one of Upper Bavaria's most beautiful hiking trails – the ridge walk to Heimgarten. A real experience!

Hydroelectric Energy
On the way south you will pass by the Walchensee hydroelectric power plant, which makes use of the difference in altitude between the two lakes of about 200 vertical metres to generate electricity. In the exhibition pavilion you can learn about the design and construction of the power plant.
