One week solely dedicated to music

Splendid music in the most beautiful surroundings: For the very last time, Brigitte Fassbaender will open the Richard Strauss Festival. Since she assumed the artistic direction in 2009, the Festival has grown in reputation to be considered one of the highlights of the Bavarian cultural scene. And one can sense yet again her handwriting in the programming, where illustrious artists gather to celebrate the great composer Richard Strauss and his immortal music. The musical contribution for the opening ceremony comes from the winners of the Richard Strauss Society’s competition. The awarding of the Strauss Medal to Gundula Janowitz will be a crowning point of the ceremony.

The motto in 2017 is „Of Hero and the World" and one can expect first class musical events featuring international orchestras, ensembles and soloists. The line-up includes Gundula Janowitz, Christiane Karg, the King's Singers and TV star Udo Wachtveitl. Music lovers from all over the world enjoy the very special festival atmosphere and the outstanding aural experiences in, amongst other venues, the Olympia Skating Rink, the World’s only such venue where classical music can be enjoyed.

In 2017 the Festival takes place from the 24th to the 30th of June.

Not forgetting that outside the festival week, one can still walk in the footsteps of the great composer and conductor. All year round the Richard Strauss Institute invites you to explore the life and work of the great man.
