Exciting race and wintry fun on the slopes

At Epiphany (6 January), Garmisch-Partenkirchen turns upside down. For on this day, fearless women and men meet for the Bavarian "Hornschlitten" competition. This has become a tradition for more than 40 years now. The courageous pilots speed down the slope with more than 100 km per hour. Four persons occupy one wooden sledge. Daring manoeuvres and accidents are all a part of the game. They are all fighting to become the Bavarian Honrschlitten Champion.

Cross your fingers for the athletes when they speed down to the valley. The run is a classic one: The 1.2 km "High Path" leads from the Alpine hut Partnachalm right down to the doorsteps of the clubhouse of the Hornschlitten Club Partenkirchen.

Did you know: The name “Hornschlitten” comes from the form of the runners? The sledge, the lengths of which are two to three metres, used to be the peasants' equipment for transporting hay from secluded Alpine meadows into the valley for transporting wood to the farm. Many of the sledges participating in the race are original sledges that often are more than 60 years old.

On 6 January, the race starts at the Alpine hut Partnachalm. Thanks to the mixture of an exciting race for seconds and wintry fun on the slopes, the Bavarian Hornschlitten Race Championship is a real experience. Do not miss it!
