One week solely dedicated to music
He was born in München (Munich), but Garmisch-Partenkirchen was his home. The famous composer Richard Strauss used to live in his Garmisch "country house" for more than 40 years. And he loved his sanctuary, the marvellous landscape, the peace and tranquillity. Here, he was able to relax and recover from his exhausting concert tours. Being one of the most important artists of his time, Strauss travelled to all the major musical metropolises. However, there was only one place where he felt "at home": Garmisch. He loved to spend all the months of spring and summer here, together with his family – and his sheets of music.
In remembrance of our famous son, we celebrate via a music festival each summer: The Richard-Strauss-Festival. This legendary week that is dedicated to music always presents high-class musicians ranging from internationally well-known conductors, brilliant soloists and large orchestras, all of which inspire us with the works of Richard Strauss. You can look forward to an interesting and diversified programme.
- In 2012, the festival takes place from 16th June to 22th June.
